Using eDNA to Detect The Natural Re-Introduction of Two Fish Species in Rivers Where They Were Once Present
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) were once plentiful throughout the rivers and ocean waters of the Maritime region of Canada. Today, however, Salmon populations along the Bay of Fundy and the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia have been assessed as Endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife. With climate change, it is believed that the changing habitat of these two species will create an even more uncertain future for their survival.

It would be unreasonable to assume that pollutants in the marine environment have decreased following decades of world wide regulations and standards. However, recent reports have shown that pollution is still a lingering problem despite numerous decades of attempting to control what is being released into the various rivers, watersheds, lakes and oceans.
